Soccer greats come to life as hyper-realistic figures and statues.
While many Americans busy themselves prepping nachos and chicken wings in anticipation of Super Bowl Sunday, another form of football has long since taken the world by storm. Known as soccer in the U.S., the game is a global phenomenon; touching millions of viewers annually with its talented teams and idolized players. With such popularity, it is surprising that the sport hasn't received more recognition in the toy industry. Switzerland based Fanatico hopes to change all that with a new line of Plan-B sculpted figures entitled Futbolistas.
Fanatico Managing Director Derek Wanner elaborates: "Up until very recently the only soccer figurines that existed were pocket-sized caricatures or bobble-heads, which is a pretty wild thought when you consider just how massive the sport is and how obsessive it's fans are."
To help fill that void, Futbolistas will launch this month with an assortment of four 9" resin statues consisting of Diego Armando Maradona, Paolo Di Canio, Paolo Maldini, and Francesco Totti. These will be available through Diamond Comics as well as select collectible stores, soccer shops and www.fanatico.net. Each will retail for around $80 and be limited to around 5000 pieces.
Come this May, just in time for the World Cup finals, Fanatico will release their first series of dynamically posed 6" PVC figures. This unarticulated assortment, to retail for a SRP of $20, will include: Totti, Cannavaro, Del Piero, Rossi, Maradona, Milla and legendary football ref Pierluigi Collina. Sculpts for the statue and PVC lines will remain the same, though player uniform colors will be altered to reflect pro club and the national teams for their respective countries.
Future Futbolistas include a second wave of statues May/June (Collina, Adriano, Shevchenko and Cannavaro) and a second series of PVC figures, line-up to be decided.
