REVIEW: Funny Knights Masterpiece of Shunya Yamashita - PETRA

The master of beautiful anime females, Shunya Yamashita, continues to reward his fans with an array of gorgeous illustrations and artworks. Even more exciting for his fans is the continued homage to his work with the amazingly detailed busts and figures created to capture the beauty he so lovingly puts on paper. Petra is the newest girl in the continuing Masterpiece of Shunya Yamashita series that also includes Shunya-designed Rudy. This review covers not only the regular Blue Edition of Petra, but also the International Exclusive Black Variant.

PACKAGING: The packaging for Petra is the standard 4-color window box with a top opening flap. The sides all feature the beautiful original artwork that the figure is based upon. Both the regular and variant feature the same artwork and color on the box. The only difference is the sticker that identifies the variant. Overall, this box has some of the largest window die-cuts I have seen on an anime figure and I’m surprised at the sturdiness. Every side features a window, including the top, with the largest window taking up the entire back of the package. The figure itself is housed in a plastic clamshell to protect it, along with plastic protecting her paint.

SCULPT: This fantastic figure captures all of the details and sexiness of Shunya’s design. The thing you notice first about the figure is the unique and eye-catching design of the costume. It is very reminiscent of a drum major with a feel similar to something you would find in Final Fantasy. All of the little embellishments of her costume are sculpted such as the trim and patterns on her hat, stockings, and coat. The jacket is very unique and the flair of the back really gives the figure a dynamic feel and an interesting shape. Her hair is sculpted to look as if it is blowing in the wind, winding out to the side of her and covering half of her face. Her bottoms and the front of her top with the strap running around her are removable, exposing her bare breasts and g-string panties. She separates at the middle to also allow you to remove the large end of her coat in favor of a small one.

PAINT: The paint apps on this figure are generally good all around. While she features a nice airbrushed skin tone that is present on most anime figures, the added airbrushing on her costume is something extra and welcome. The only paint differences between the regular blue Petra and the limited Black Petra are the coat and hat. Most of the smaller details are painted very cleanly, but there is some run-on evident here and there. The biggest problem I have is that the eyes just don’t capture the seductive look of the 2-D Petra. Instead, the eyes look wide, almost freakish, which is why I am glad the second one is covered.

ACCESSORIES: Petra comes with a few accessories for what is predominantly a PVC statue. She of course comes with the standard base to keep her standing. Her cool accessory is her staff that can be described as looking like a giant can opener. If you can count them as accessories, she also comes with the aforementioned removable top and bottom and jacket tail with switchable short piece.

COST & OVERALL IMPRESSION: Petra is a welcome addition to the ever-growing assortment of Shunya based products available on the market. While she boasts a unique design, she doesn’t quite capture the sexy appeal of other Shunya figures and really didn’t need the increasingly more gimmicky removable clothing option to warrant adding her to your collection. It just really doesn’t work for this character and her outfit. But overall a great display piece that fits well with the rest of your Shunya and anime collection.
