Much like Cartman's one episode stint as "A.W.E.S.O.M.-O," Miura Hayasaka goes Ms. Roboto as Danboard in a chapter of the ongoing comedy manga series Yotsuba&! (Yotsuba to!). Miura/Danboard joins lead character Yotsuba in Kaiyodo's growing Revoltech family, more appropriately, Revoltech 2G. This fun figure packs quite a few surprises, including a Revoltech first: Light-up eyes!

PACKAGING: Kaiyodo took a radically new approach to the packaging design for Danboard. While the standard Revoltech window remains, new windows have been added to Danboard's box, including the title's exclamation mark and the "robot's" face. The package further mimics Danboard in its cardboard color and construction. It is an extremely attractive presentation, definitely one of the most unique packages I've seen in some time.

SCULPT & PAINT: For a girl in a box, the sculpt on Danboard is simple, yet visually addictive. Paired with deftly applied brown hues, the carved cardboard flaps and folds spring realistically to life.

Some crisply applied kanji writing adorns Danboard's right leg, but it is the detailed itty bitty switch that truly amazes. More on that clever addition later on.

ARTICULATION: Danboard features much fewer Revolver Joints than previous Revoltech releases, but that is simple due to the unarticulated nature of the box beast. However, what is included -- joints at the shoulders, legs and neck -- does provide for a variety of display poses; from "zombie walking" with arms outstretched, to holding her box OR girl head (yes, Miura is a she:). In addition, the lower front and back box flaps swing in and out, albeit slightly.

Unlike the standard black Revoltech display tree, Danboard includes a pegged, circular base branded "Yotsuba&! Enjoy Everything". It certainly isn't required to balance Danboard, but it's a welcome extra.

Having Kaiyodo's ingenius Revolver Joints also allows you to get creative. Mix Danboard up with Saber, or better yet, buy 5 Danboards and assemble the ultimate box 'bot!

ACCESSORIES: Not much in the way of extras here, aside from the alternate Miura head and display base. What more than makes up for this shortcoming is the inclusion of light-up eyes! That tiny switch on the side of Danboard's head isn't just for show, it actually works. The tiny batteries in mine were DOA, but luckily I had some spares -- easily swapped via a compartment beneath her box head. Pretty cool stuff, especially when I wasn't even expecting it. I must also add that Danboard's "power-up" is extremely bright, instantly turning the innocent toy into a handy flashlight or desk lamp.

COST: Danboard is being imported to the U.S. exclusively via Organic Hobby and retails for the standard Revoltech price tag of around $20. While more costly than the U.S. going rate of $10-12 for a mass market figure, it's about right for a Japanese import. You won't find Danboard in your local Wal-Mart anytime soon. For those living in Japan, there is also an Amazon.co.jp exclusive available. Priced at 2200 yen (also $20), this version parrots Amazon's shipping boxes.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: While primarily geared towards Japanese fans of the manga, Danboard's unique presentation and appearance will appeal to those with a taste for daring designer toys. Like trying to solve an engimatic puzzle box, Danboard is an intriguing and tempting Revoltech buy.
