REVIEW: Kotobukiya To Aru Majutsu no Index Kaori Kanzaki PVC Figure

To Aru Majutsu no Index or "A Certain Magical Index" is a popular light novel manga series that was recently adapted into a twenty-four episode anime. The story involves students living in Academy City, a community consisting of all schools specializing in scientific advancement and attended by students of varying abilities and levels. The main character Toma Kamijo has a level 0 but possesses an ability-nullifying right hand called Imagine Breaker. He ends up meeting a young nun named Index who is being pursued because her photographic mind contains 103,000 volumes of magic, making her highly important. After saving her life he meets many powerful allies and foes. One such person is Kaori Kanzaki. A sorceress from Necessarius, Kaori possesses a powerful magic ability that combined with her “Seven Heavens Seven Swords” makes her a strong friend and protector. The lovely Kaori Kanzaki is now captured in a stunning new figure from Kotobukiya.

Packaging:

Kaori’s packaging is your typical four-sided window display with a color scheme that is overall shades of purple. The purple backdrop is semi-cloudy with faint hints of spells and ruins. Almost every side of the box has images of the enclosed figure, the series logo and the character’s name in Kanji. The package has a total of three windows to view the figure: The front, top, and right side. Inside the character is protected by a plastic shell and has various parts wrapped in plastic to preserve her paint job. The figure is in front of a purple insert featuring stars and the moon as a backdrop. One extra detail for fans of the series is the white strands on the left hand side of the box that are meant to mimic Kaori’s special attack called Nanasen or “Seven Flash”.

Sculpt:

Despite having a fairly simple wardrobe, the beautiful Kaori is made interesting and dynamic by a unique pose, small details, and wild hairstyle. Rather than being perched on a typical round or square base, Kaori is battle-ready upon a multi level rock surface with one leg placed on a large rock, perhaps ready to spring for attack. Her arms are both at her side and ready to unleash her sword from its sheath. Her head sculpt is the highlight of her figure however, with her long ponytail flailing out behind her in several directions: a stark contrast to her emotionless expression.

Several small details highlight her appearance and add to the look of the character. Her simple white tee features realistic wrinkling as it is pulled tight and tied at the side. Her one-legged jeans feature seams and pockets as well as fringe and studs along the ankle to make them more unique. Her belt, which features several studs and a sculpted buckle hangs loosely around her hips and supports the sheath for her sword. This piece actually has to be assembled by separating the figure at the waist and inserting the handle of the word in both the sheath and the character’s hands. Perhaps the most interesting part of her wardrobe is her wildly patterned cowboy boots that match her outfit and feature sculpted details and fringe and studs to match her pants.

Paint:

Kaori is painted very cleanly and has one-color applications for the most part. All of her small details, including the patterns on her boots, the rivets and buckle of her belt and the design on her sword are all painted nicely despite the small size. She has been hit very subtly with airbrush on various parts including her hair, skin, jeans to give her more form, and definition. The transfers used for her eyes have also been applied perfectly.

Overall:

As a fan of To Aru Majutsu no Index, I couldn’t be happier to have the sexy Kaori Kanzaki guarding my anime collection. The character makes a great addition to the series of figures released from the popular manga and anime that also includes Index herself and the recently released Kuroko Shirai.
